About this freelance invoice template
Freelancers usually invoice for time or for a fixed project. A clear invoice makes it easy for your client's accounts team to approve and pay it without coming back to you with questions.
What to put on a freelance invoice
- Name the project and the client's reference or PO number in the description or reference box, so their accounts team can match it.
- List time and fixed fees on separate lines, so the client can see what each part cost.
- Say which revisions were included in the price, and bill anything beyond that as its own line.
- Put your payment terms on the invoice itself. Net 14 or net 30 is common.

Questions people ask
How should a freelancer number invoices?
Use a simple running number such as INV-0001. Some freelancers add the year, like 2026-001, so the number also shows when it was issued.
Should I invoice at the start or the end of a project?
For larger jobs, many freelancers invoice a deposit at the start and the balance on delivery. Use the Deposit box to show what has already been paid.
Is anything I type sent to a server?
No. The document is made inside your browser. Your business details and the last document are remembered on this device only, so you do not have to retype them, and you can wipe them with the link under the preview.
