About this freelance writer invoice template
Writers are paid by the word, by the piece, or by the hour. Whichever you use, the invoice should name each piece so the publication's accounts team can match it to the commission.
What to put on a freelance writer invoice
- Name each article or piece, with the title or the commissioning editor's reference.
- Show the word count or piece rate, so the maths is obvious.
- Keep separate lines for extras such as rewrites, research or sourcing images.
- Add the date each piece was delivered and the agreed payment terms.

Should I invoice per word or per article?
Use the basis you agreed when you were commissioned. Showing the word count next to a per-piece price also helps, if the editor asks.
When should a writer send the invoice?
Usually as soon as the piece is delivered or accepted. Many publications will not pay until they have the invoice, so send it promptly.
Is anything I type sent to a server?
No. The document is made inside your browser. Your business details and the last document are remembered on this device only, so you do not have to retype them, and you can wipe them with the link under the preview.
